El Toro Vineyard

The one that belongs to "Balbaina" and sometimes to "Los Tercios"

This vineyard has changed its assignment to one or another plot for different reasons. The characteristics of the vineyards are so decisive in the qualities of each grape that, depending on the moment, it is even better to go for a lower-yielding variety.

Thus, when the market is favourable for a particular type of wine that coincides with the grape that gives the best yield, it is the time to go for that grape.

El Toro is a vineyard located in the old Pago de los Tercios. The building that currently stands on the estate was built in the sixties of the 20th century, but in the first third of the 19th century it had a building that met all the conditions to cover the needs of the agricultural tasks related to the vineyard, such as: wine presses for pressing and obtaining the wine and cellars for storing the must.

The name of the vineyard has been popularly linked to the breeding of fighting bulls, but it is probably due to a family of owners who kept it for years in the 19th century, surnamed "del Toro", who built a winery and produced wines of various kinds: whites, viso (sheen), coloured, harvested from the Arenas and from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Tercios, the highly-prized aged Finos and Pedro Ximénez. They also had barrels of vinegar, which were less sought after at that time than they are today.

José del Toro Llanos married to María de los Ángeles Pacheco Ubera, the owners of the vineyard, had a house with a wine cellar in Calle de Las Cruces on the corner with San Francisco, in the centre of the historic quarter of El Puerto de Santa María.
