Salt Marshes

El Puerto's Salt Marshes are wetlands originated by man work searching for an ancestral resource such as salt, but hey are also spaces full of biodiversity, a refuge and breeding places for numerous birds typical of wetlands and marshes. The osprey, flamingos and a great variety of shorebirds form part of the valuable natural and ethnographic heritage treasured by the "Salina de la Tapa and Marivélez" or the "Salina de Santa María"

Further information

The Phoenicians were the first to develop salt extraction in the marshes of the Bay of Cadiz and controlled the salt trade throughout the Mediterranean.  

Already in Roman times this industry reaches its peak, exporting to the whole empire salted fish and the famous sauce "garum".
