This old convent building barely conserves the original physiognomy of the convent of San Agustín de El Puerto in the 16th century. The transformation of this building dates back to the disentailments of the 19th century, when it was taken over by the State and, from 1840 onwards, became an educational centre.
In the fifties of the last century, the building suffered the most important and definitive changes adapting it to the new uses, disappearing most of the convent's premises, including the church of San Agustín.
The convent of San Agustín was built in 1573 on the site of the old hermitage of the Encarnación, coinciding with Augustinian foundations in other nearby cities and on the American continent, where they played an important role in the missionary work.
This was the first settlement of the Augustinian order of El Puerto, which gradually expanded owing to the acquisition of adjoining properties, some purchased by the Augustinian community, and many others received as donations until it became a large building with a facade facing four streets: Misericordia, Palacios, Jesús de los Milagros and Alquiladores
The building had a church, built in the 17th century, which was demolished in the twenties of the last century, and was accessed from Alquiladores street, then a dead-end street, with a facade closing off the streets. The church had a single aisle, with four side chapels, a large transept covered with a half-orange dome and a bell tower.
The refurbishment that was carried out at the beginning of the 21st century has been able to recover some old holes in the walls and some marks that had been hidden, which tell us about what the building must have been like, although it barely conserves any remains.
Of the old convent, the large square cloister with galleries on four sides and double height has been preserved.
