El Palomar Roman Furnace Complex

The clay industry for wine exports

The concentration of kilns and industrial potteries suggests a productive activity that made it necessary to build extensive communication routes and infrastructures to supply raw materials (firewood and clay) as well as the finished product.

Given the volume seen in the number and size of all the ovens and the associated infrastructures, it can be deduced that there was a significant quantity of both wine and oil for export.

The site of the Roman Furnaces of El Palmar is located on the left side of the Camino del Tejar, which at the beginning is next to the Roman Road. This location is related to the proximity to the raw material and the communication links for the sale of the production.

Researchers speculate with the possibility that, before the pottery exploitation, the pottery space was part of an agricultural operation of a Roman villa, as large vessels (dolias) have been found in the area, which could be linked to the production of oil or wine.

The pottery complex is made up of six kilns, two large ones and four smaller ones, together with other facilities that may have been related to storage, turning and refuse disposal areas. Pottery activity began in the early 1st century BC and there is speculation that it may have continued until the 4th century.
